Euthanasia Policy
At TPR, we know the subject of euthanasia is a sensitive and difficult one. We believe in being open and honest with our supporters, adopters, and the public about how we approach these decisions.
We adopt dogs directly from shelters in Romania and, where possible, also place dogs into foster care across Scotland. Unlike many organisations, we do not have a premises or kennels.
Our priority is always to give dogs the best possible chance of a safe and happy life. For that reason:
We will never euthanise a healthy, adoptable dog.
Euthanasia is only ever considered as a very last resort.
The welfare and quality of life of the individual dog, as well as the safety of people and other animals, are always at the heart of the decision.
Situations Where Euthanasia May Be Considered
Although rare, euthanasia may be considered in circumstances such as:
A severe medical condition that cannot be treated and prevents the dog from living a pain-free, good quality life.
An untreatable infectious disease that poses a serious risk to other animals or people.
Severe, unmanageable aggression that poses a significant danger to people or animals, where no safe rehabilitation or management options are available.
In such cases, we believe it is far kinder for a dog to be peacefully put to sleep with the people they know and love, rather than being returned to a shelter or moved on to strangers.
Decision-Making Process
Any consideration of euthanasia involves discussion between the family, our rescue team, and veterinary professionals.
All other options — such as treatment, behaviour support, or specialist rescue involvement — are explored first.
The decision is made with compassion, transparency, and the dog’s best interests at heart.
How Euthanasia is Carried Out
Euthanasia is only performed by a qualified veterinary surgeon.
Pre-sedation is used to ensure calmness and dignity.
Wherever possible, the procedure is carried out in a peaceful, familiar environment to minimise stress for the dog.
The reasons for the decision are fully documented for accountability and transparency.
Transparency
We are committed to being open with our community. Any euthanasia decisions are reported to our Board of Trustees and included in our Annual Report.
✨ At TPR, we give every dog the chance of a safe and happy home. Euthanasia is only ever considered as the kindest and most compassionate option when no other possibilities remain.
